The tall, cold, impermeable walls of Shawshank ensured everyman therein had nothing to view around them, but a panorama of stone, steel, dirt & regret. Time inside these walls would eventually break the very last of the average man’s spirit & hope – except, as it turns out for one - Andy Dufresne. Inside these walls insanity was commonplace – Why some days, you could see some crazies dragging toy wooden horses around by a string for fun, amongst this madness others would be waving their hands in the air & emptying their pockets out, just for the chance to own one. Some of the residents where not originally from the area, outta towner’s, blow-ins. all of them were at that age in life were a 2nd cup of coffee, too soon - could prompt a blow-out. But they were all there to stay, locked-in, Lifers! I guess they all had a common purpose – Get busy living/Get busy fundraising – If things work out, you might even get an excuse for a cool midweek beer in Terrys. The Warden “Norton” Maxwell -why he would have you sized up for a casket at 1st glance. (Some say, he had connections with some powerful people, maybe even the president!) His prison guards were mean & sadistic. Guard “Captain Hadley” Gallagher – he would say “I’ll take you up to the highest point around here & throw you down the stairs like 100 plastic balls from Aldi” Guard “Mert” Connell: Why, He swung his baton like a golfer on the “T” ............................................ Andy did make some friends................................................................. “Red” Francis: – Who, when they 1st met: had acquired Andy a very tasteful poster of Kayliegh Trappe. (the Samba outfit- if you’re wondering!) Red would often talk to Andy about exotic faraway wonderful places - LATTON & BAWN Benny Og “Heywood”: - Who always had the idea that some flowers, ingenuity & innovation could brighten the place up a little. - make it Bloom. Andy had a plan: (Actually, he had several: 1st one was to disguise himself as a robot mower, & sneak away, but alas he could not face the thoughts of the 110V plug & the overnight charging.) Eventually, with Kayleigh’s poster as cover he cut his way through those walls & crawled from Rooskey, on through the mire of the former Ulster canal to Clones, hopped the border & persevered onward, to where he was completely sure no-one from Shawshank or Monaghan would ever be able to recognize him – Bundoran!
